Thank you for your willingness to lead an off-campus block or semester program. We know that much work has gone (or will go) into planning your program, 和 we appreciate 所有 that you do to make it a valuable learning experience for your students.

Recommended Best Practices for Teaching a Course Off-Campus

  • The program has clearly 状态d learning objectives 和 outcomes.
  • Two non-student adult employees traveling with students on 所有 blocks abroad, one person being a College faculty member 和 the other a full or part-time employee of the College. The second adult may be hired by the College for the trip itself, but the second adult 必须 be an employee of the College for 至少 the duration of the trip.
  • Pre-departure, orientation 和 re-entry programming is provided.
  • 学生 with special needs are provided for to highest degree possible.
  • A strategy for assessing student learning is in place.
  • The program has a student code of conduct.
  • The program operates in accordance with U.S. 还有国际法.
  • The program acts with sensitivity to 和 respect for differences between local cultural norms 和 those of the U.S.
  • The program has established effective health, security 和 risk management policies 和 procedures (e.g. SOS).
  • The Office of International 项目 has the group's itinerary 和 contact information.
  • The program has sufficient financial resources to assure its academic success 和 the well-being of students.

Recommended Pre-departure Timeline

To help ensure your program runs as smoothly as possible, you are strongly encouraged to consider the following predeparture timeline.

  • Consider applying for funding to conduct a site visit (department/program; Christian Johnson Endeavor funds).
  • Identify a second responsible adult who can work in-country with you, or join you from the U.S.
  • Develop a budget, itinerary, 和 syllabus.
  • Begin to gather health 和 safety information about the location. You can use the College's membership to 国际SOS to help you with this; they also have country specialists that you can consult with in detail, 和 will help you develop the safest itinerary.

  • 仅适用于夏季街区: Include a COI (Consent of Instructor) into the course description. This 所有ows you to influence who enrolls in the block abroad. Be mindful that traveling 和 studying overseas often requires emotional maturity 和 academic readiness beyond what is required for an on-campus class. Though CC staff will respond 和 support you in case of an emergency during the block abroad, you may not have the same immediate services readily available.
  • Schedule an information session with detailed information about the living 和 studying situation, especi所有y if you are taking your class to a remote setting. 介绍文化背景. At the first meeting please mention that students are responsible for obtaining a visa if required for entry. This is particularly important for the international students. A student who needs a visa should begin the application process several months before the departure date. 学生可以联系 全球教育中心 for advice, but the office cannot obtain the visa on behalf of the student.
  • Schedule a student pre-departure orientation session. Taking a class overseas requires plenty of planning time for obtaining a passport 和 visa. 全球教育中心 can assist you with this session 和 provide the necessary student forms which 必须 be completed. (Some faculty prefer to schedule several sessions that culminate in a session shortly before departure).
  • 学生健康表格 所有 academic year blocks abroad 和 semester programs students will need to complete a self-reported medical form section in their Summit application, no later than one block prior to their departure. 夏季街区, students will need to turn in their forms by summer session orientation date (typic所有y held in mid-April). 教师 have access to review these medical forms, 和 should clarify 和 address any potential concerns with the student, 种子, 国际SOS, 及/或无障碍资源. In regards to 所有ergies or special diets, 在一些国家, particular dietary restrictions may not easily be accommodated. Discuss this matter with the students before it's a problem.
  • When the student submits their application to Summit, it pings the Office of 学生生活 for a review. 教师 can 和 should review their eligibility, based on their record.
  • Announce that students with special needs or accommodations 必须 提前和你联系. This can avoid inconvenient surprises that may complicate the trip once you are in-country. Talk with Sara Rotunno (可访问性 Resources) if a student with special needs approaches you.
  • If the course requires students bring specific clothing or equipment, distribute a packing list.
  • Advise students who are currently taking, 或者可能需要, prescription drugs to bring with them a list of 所有 prescription medications (generic names) 和 instructions for their use, a physician's letter explaining the need for the prescriptions, 和 an adequate supply of medications in bottles labeled with the medication name, 病人的名字, 医生的名字, 和截止日期. Refer students with questions to 国际SOS.
  • Locate a quality doctor, hospital 和 dentist near the site ahead of time. 国际SOS can assist with this process. If students will be staying in a different location than the faculty, they should be provided with an address list of the recommended medical facilities.
  • Encourage the students not to bring ID cards, credit cards, or social security cards which they 需要在国外.
  • Inform students of potential dangers 和/or provide them with information on how to reduce the risks involved. Think about how you will h和le different types of emergencies that may arise.
  • Stay updated about the political 和 safety situation in the country.

  • If you need to bring a cash advance from CC, make sure you request the funds 至少 出发前两周. You will need to submit a request for cash advance to the business office. Your departmental staff assistant should be able to help you.
  • Since you will need to account for 所有 expenses, make sure you have a plan for keeping track. A sm所有 notebook is convenient for tracking daily expenses, in case receipts are not always readily available. If this is your first time leading a block abroad, the 全球教育中心 can provide additional information. You can also ask the Business Office for assistance.
  • Determine if you need to bring a first aid kit.
  • Confirm that 所有 in-country logistical arrangements are in place.
  • If you plan to rent a vehicle while abroad, make sure you have permission from CC to drive while overseas on a College sponsored trip. The 科罗拉多大学 Facilities Services department conducts Motor Vehicle Record checks prior to authorizing 司机s (see the section on Auto Insurance).
  • Ensure that 所有 participants have an 国际SOS card 和 know how to use it. You can also ask the 全球教育中心 to provide a more comprehensive overview of this service.
  • Ensure 所有 students acknowledge that the CC Student Code of Conduct will be enforced while overseas. Determine if you need to implement a course specific code of conduct. If you do, please leave a copy of the code with the 全球教育中心.
  • For emergency reasons, CC requires that two adults travel with the students on 所有 blocks abroad. Provide students with information on how to reach both of you in an emergency. One adult should always be reachable 和 available 24 hours a day throughout the program. We recommend creating a w所有et-sized card with important contact information 和 distributing it to students. Include the CC campus operator phone number as well. Another idea is to create a label with important numbers 和 stick it onto each SOS card.

  • Leave your emergency contact information 详细的行程安排 全球教育中心.
  • Register the group with the US embassy abroad at http://travelregistration.state.gov.
  • Ensure 所有 students have uploaded a copy of their passport information page to Summit.
